I previously suggested that for the Syrian Baath regime, the strategic alliance with Iran is a strategic choice in the regional geopolitics, and represents strategic decision at the international level. Then, it is an essential part of Syria’s foreign policy and Syria’s international relations and strategy, under Baath control of course.
This Syrian approach actually rests on the Baath regime’s own interests and directions in addition to its basic needs to be somehow protected and sponsored by a regional or international power, as a non-democratic regime that has no electoral or representative base. Therefore, the Syrian-Iranian alliance is an indispensable umbrella for the Syrian Baath regime.
Then, I can surely suggest that the alliance between Iran and Syria is one of the stable geopolitical realities of the Middle East, as it has, for the both parties a strategic nature rather than to be an alliance of convenience as it wrongly thought by some international parties. Therefore, the regional and international strategies and policies concerning the Middle East region are required to deal with this Middle Eastern geopolitical reality and its implications, ramifications and effects on the region’s geopolitics, and to take them fully into consideration.
In this regard, the most affected parties by this strategic enduring alliance are the Arab parties, especially the leading Arab countries and their sponsored regional Arab system, which is associated with common Arab vital interests and a related general view of the region, especially the Arab region. This entire sought system and its associated project, view and dynamics are basically based on the immunity of the Arab countries and the Arab affairs and situations from the regional interventions, which serve the intervening regional countries’ own interests.
Therefore, the strategic Syrian-Iranian alliance is deemed a serious penetration of the Arab region and the aforementioned Arab system. The Arab fears and concerns, in this regard, are heightened by the vital geographic position of Syria, which has a key importance in the region’s geopolitics, as neighboring some key countries and some key situations of regional and international importance. Thereby, for Iran, Syria, the forward Mediterranean base, is the bridge for the Iranian hand to Lebanon, Palestine and the Israeli borders, and also the bridge for the Iranian role on the region’s key and prime issue of the Israeli-Arab conflict, besides other various geopolitical implications concerning the rest of regional countries and realities.
Then, the Syrian-Iranian alliance is a key issue for the Arab countries in general, as it extends the Iranian active presence into the heart of the Arab region, or what is called the Arab world, and provides the ground for the Iranian interventions in this Arab region and its affairs. Therefore, to tackle this question is an indispensable necessity for the general Arab strategy and policies, as it is an unavoidable task for ensuring the Arab vital interests over the regional interventions and schemes.
