Stagnation is the hallmark of political situations in the Middle East authoritarian countries or the most of them. It is an intrinsic feature or quality of authoritarian and totalitarian systems and non-democratic systems in general.
Actually, the political stagnation preserves the political system and consequently the ruling regime. For authoritarian and totalitarian regimes, any tolerated political activation or independent political activism is a venture with definite serious political consequences.
Therefore, in authoritarian and totalitarian systems, political activism is definitely banned under serious consequences and punishments to any violations. This authoritarian course of action eventually kills the political spirit of the nation, and causes a sustainable state of political stagnation associated, all the way, with civil political inaction, which is also a characteristic of the Middle East authoritarian countries.
In those political systems, this deliberate course of action by the authoritarian regimes inflicts the elites of the societies in such countries, and intellectuals in general, a general and preserved state of fear; and inflicts the general publics in those countries a state of political apathy accompanying usually a state of political ignorance. Then, this course of action within a wide system of political stagnation can ensure a targeted uninterrupted political status quo and maintain it against potential political changes.
Hence, for developing the political situation in the Middle East authoritarian countries towards the long-awaited democratization, any opportunity should be taken to make any possible political stir through this chronic political stagnation, which could cause consequently some political changes in this regard.
In a previous article, I suggested that law or decreasing oil price is definitely not in favor of the authoritarian and totalitarian systems and their associated regimes, and particularly the traditional status quo in general in the Middle East that this would have political implications and cause political changes respectively.
Then, this cut in financial resources at the disposal of the Middle East authoritarian regimes and governments besides the international financial crisis might be an opportunity for political stirring in the Middle East. Therefore, I urge all domestic and international concerned parties in political change and democratization in particular in the Middle East to take this opportunity to revive political activism and activate the Middle East political stagnation towards the targeted political change, especially in terms of political rights and public freedoms in the Middle East authoritarian countries.
