Lebanon Rockets and Arab Split: The New Radical Campaign

It is the second time in which some rockets have been fired at northern Israel from southern Lebanon. The first rockets firing from southern Lebanon took place just a few days ago by a side described lately by the U.N. forces in Lebanon UNIFIL as professional.

Hezbullah denied any relation to the first incident of rockets firing, and made it clear to all concerned parties that it is not interested in a new war with Israel across the blue line regardless the incidents in Gaza and the Israeli military operation there in accordance with the Iranian current policy in this regard. According to the Israeli investigation based on the type of the launched rockets, this firing was made by a Palestinian group based in Damascus, the Jebril group, whose affiliation with the Syrian Baath regime is well known regionally and internationally. Israel also declared that there was no relation between Hezbullah and this incident, as it had not such type of rockets, which fired at Israel.

In this regard, during the period of this incident, the suspected Palestinian group, the Jebril group, was calling from Damascus for opening all fronts to fight Israel in response to the Israeli Gaza operation, as the rockets were fired at Israel. This was an essential part of the context of this incident. There was also another key part constituting the context of the previous incident represented by Hamas’ first response to the Egyptian ceasefire and settlement initiative, which was negative through rejecting this initiative, as announced by Hamas from its headquarters in Damascus along with a unified position by all Palestinian groups based in Damascus, which are supposedly under the influence of the Syrian Baath regime.

The second firing incident from southern Lebanon came in the context of the intensified Egyptian efforts to achieve a ceasefire associated with a settlement according to the Egyptian initiative, especially after the UNSC resolution 1680, which called for an immediate ceasefire and backed the Egyptian initiative. In addition, this above context includes the Qatar’s very controversial step of inviting to an emergency Arab summit in Doha, which has been strongly backed by the Syrian regime. This step comes completely against the will of the leading Arab moderate countries, as they are engaging in a diplomatic campaign and mediation efforts to implement the resolution 1680 that they have hardly achieved earlier. In this regard, it widely thought among these countries that Qatar’s surprising step is meant to confuse their efforts, especially the Egyptian role to achieve a ceasefire and a settlement of Gaza current situation.

Hence, the common elements between the contexts of the two firings from southern Lebanon are apparently indicating the reality that there is a partial campaign within the Arab group existing on its own, which has a basic regional extent reaches Iran, wants to impose itself on this region and its realities, and create a significant role in the region for its component parties, by any means and at any expense. Against the Arab moderate campaign, this partial new campaign adopts radicalism and uses extremism and extremist entities in the region for its advantage and in its above endeavor.

In my view, this is a serious and dangerous regional reality should be clearly realized at the regional and international levels to eventually cope with it.
