Considering the serious humanitarian situation in Gaza strip resulted from the Israeli military operation, the UN Security Council has adopted a resolution on the situation in Gaza after wide efforts by the Arab countries in this regard. The resolution was mainly drafted and sponsored by the United Kingdom, and adopted by the council after intensified and hard negotiations between the Arab group and the member countries of the Security Council.
This resolution came in the context of active regional and international diplomatic efforts, which started on the tenth day of the operation, along with various international statements and remarks clearly indicating the international grave concern over the situation in Gaza strip, especially in humanitarian terms.
On the Israeli side, Israel failed to stop the council from taking any step on this question in spite of its hard efforts in this regard. This failure was prompted by the fact that the Israeli military operation was disregarding the humanitarian conditions that consequently resulted in a serious humanitarian situation in the strip.
For the international community, this consequent humanitarian situation in Gaza strip is not affordable. This is actually the essential international message conveyed by this resolution, which was intended principally to deal with this serious humanitarian situation, as indicated by its wording and context.
Recently, Egypt has succeeded in rallying the leaders of many leading international powers, particularly the European leaders, in Sharm al-Sheikh conference. The wide international participation in this conference at the leaders’ level indicates the international importance of Gaza question and the deep dimensions of the Israeli massive military operation in the strip.
This international demonstration in Egypt came in the same context of the latest UN Security Council resolution 1860 on Gaza question. It was actually a complementary action affirming this SC resolution and stressing its principles for a settlement of Gaza question. The ultimate implication of this broad international conference, besides stressing these principles, was to send the international clear message expressing the international disapproval of such massive military operation and its humanitarian bad results due to its disregarding of civilians and their situation, and the international grave concern over the serious humanitarian situation in Gaza strip. Furthermore, this conference was primarily intended to confirm the ceasefire in the strip.
The international course on Gaza question and crisis from the Security Council resolution to the international broad summit in Egypt stresses the humanitarian dimension that should be considered in the national policies and actions in the Middle East, and the importance of this dimension and this question at the international level. It also indicates implicitly the international disapproval of such massive military actions in the Middle East, as they leave serious consequences in the region.
