The Religious-Political Polarity in the Middle East

The empirical methodology, when adopted in reading the latest years’ events and realities in the Middle East, would definitely lead to a deducing that there is an apparent nascent political polarity in the Middle East. This perceived polarity is getting clearer day by day with developments and events taking place over time there.

This polarity in the Middle East is getting more connected to two poles in the region. In addition, it takes religious cover, especially after Shia took power in Iraq. These two poles are the Shia Iran and the Sunni Saudi Arabia. As Iran is a very clear pole representing and using the Shia cover with a clear agenda, project and alliances in the Middle East, Saudi Arabia is gradually taking the place of the opposite pole with the development of events and realities in the region.

This reality has been shown in particular in Lebanon over the latest years of political scene and confrontations there. In addition, this reality is currently appearing in the various political and geopolitical developments and challenges in the Middle East, especially in the recent occurrences.

However, although this polarity has, in general, religious cover and distribution between Sunnis and Shias, it defiantly has political nature and scope, and most importantly, it has a geopolitical essence and shape. The mere reading of the Middle East’s geopolitical map will clarify and prove this polarity in the region.

Actually, Saudi Arabia takes the moderates’ campaign and rallies most of the moderate countries and powers in the Middle East while Iran leads the Middle East Totalitarian Axis consisted of the last Baath, Hezbullah and Hamas representing the extremists’ campaign.

As the moderate campaign has the ability to get international support and respect, which is shown for example in the current conference on dialogue between religions Saudi Arabia has invited to, the extremist campaign is internationally isolated and sanctioned, and attaching itself to terror and political violence, which is very obvious reality, especially in the Iranian behavior in the region.

Since this polarity in this political and religious shape is an obviously perceived reality in the Middle East, the region’s Shias should make their historic choice on where they stand because history in the Middle East is merciless.
