In spite of the Israeli persistent silence about the object of its strike, which targeted a suspected nuclear site in the East of Syria, this question was referred to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) earlier this year.
The IAEA had managed to make an inspection visit to the Syrian site in question, and recently it issued its report on this inspection and its results indicating that uranium trace was found in the inspected site.
In addition, it reached the structural resemblance between the inspected site and typical nuclear sites in terms of many essential elements including the biological shield and cooling facilities connected to the nearby Euphrates River.
Besides, the IAEA report indicated the Baath regime’s immediate actions after the strike to remove the remains and transfer them to an unknown location and to construct a new building above the destroyed suspected building to hide it along with its nature and features.
This strike in addition to related leaks media reports and the IAEA inspection revealed a very important and serious matter was taking place in the Middle East. Apart from the North Korean behavior and violations about non-proliferation, it was really surprising that Baath regime, in spite of its years-long international isolation after the Hariri assassination, had a clandestine nuclear program could have changed the region’s balance of power and the region’s geopolitics and even the future of this area of the Middle East region.
First of all, after this revelation, it is well established and known now the Baath steady and certain policy of pursuing the weapons of mass destruction (WMD) as applied by the both of the two regimes of Baath inflicted Iraq and Syria. Then, if there were another Baath regime, it certainly would seek the WMD.
Furthermore, this revelation shows that Baath regime located in Syria takes after the allied Iranian totalitarian theocratic regime. Then, the Iranian regime is now a paradigm and model for other totalitarian regimes at least in the region. Hence, this further proves the association between totalitarianism and violence in all its shapes and means, especially in the Middle East region, which has surviving totalitarian regimes and a totalitarian axis led by the Iranian regime. Those regimes in the region are seeking every means to ensure their own survival and existence besides their rules in the future of the changing Middle East and, in some way, changing realities there.
Hence, as the Iranian regime, the master of the totalitarian regimes in the Middle East, the over-40-years Baath regime in Syria is seeking a life-insurance policy to save itself and further means to achieve this objective by obtaining nuclear technology or nuclear weapon, while it intends to stay decades to come unlike its counterpart in Iraq.
